North America Nuclear Decommissioning Market Outlook to 2022-Market Analysis by Geography, Components, Competitive Landscape, Key Company Information-Growth Trends and Forecasts

(EnergyIndustry.Net, September 26, 2017 ) The demand for nuclear power in North America has been on the decline over the past decade, and a similar trend is expected during the forecast period. In addition, North America is home to major global companies involved in nuclear decommissioning services. The North America nuclear power market holds the highest share among the other regions of the world and thus presents a huge market for nuclear decommissioning. This market is expected to increase during the forecast period, as many power plants are reaching the end life of their operation; where it is economically not viable to produce power. Hence, they present a market opportunity. The United States is leading the market in the region, with around 100 nuclear power generation units with a plan to increase the number.

The United States is estimated to remain a major market for nuclear decommissioning in the future as well. Even though nuclear energy is considered a low carbon technology, nuclear power plant related accidents such as the Three-Mile Island accident, the Chernobyl disaster, and the recent Fukushima nuclear power plant accident have all been cause for concern to the public, though the governments in North America are determined to pursue nuclear power generation. As a result, the United States and Canada are expected to shed a few nuclear power plants due to public pressure and anti-nuclear movements. Moreover, there are certain reactors that retire from operation as they are economically not viable to produce power. Canada is an important country in the nuclear market and interestingly has also been a place where Greenpeace was founded to protest nuclear weapons in 1969. There are several public interest groups within Canada that demand nuclear phase out. This situation might eventually pressurize Canadian authorities to halt their nuclear power plant operations eventually, driving the market for nuclear decommissioning. Hence, North American Nuclear Decommissioning market is expected to show significant growth.

Market Dynamics

The main concern regarding the nuclear decommissioning projects is the reliability of services offered. For example, in the case of the decommissioning of Brennilis Nuclear Power Plant in France, which is a 70 MW reactor, despite the huge costs of dismantling, leakages of radioactive elements into the nearby lake have been reported. In addition, there are high investment costs that are involved in decommissioning a nuclear reactor. In the United States, it is estimated that decommissioning cost of each reactor can be about USD 400 million to USD 5 billion. However, these high costs will not prevent the market growth prospects, as there will be a steady requirement for decommissioning of the nuclear reactors. The United States presents a market opportunity as the country has 65 pressurized water reactors and 34 boiling water reactors. The nuclear reactors installed between 1967 and 1990 generate most of the power and need to be dismantled, eventually.

Market Segmentation & Scope

The nuclear decommissioning market is applicable to different reactor applications such as Commercial Power Reactor, Prototype Power Reactor, as well as, Research Reactor. Hence, the market segmentation is done based on these categories. The market has also been categorized into five segments based on the reactor type, such as pressurized water reactor, pressurized heavy water reactor, high-temperature gas cooled reactor, and liquid metal fast breeder reactor. The XX reactor type of accounted for the largest share, with more than XX % of total share, in 2016. The market has also been geographically segmented into different countries such as Canada, the United States, Mexico etc., with USA occupying the largest consumer base in the region. Canada and Mexico follow the list in the same order. The major companies dominating this market for its products, services, and continuous product developments have been listed in the report.
