BioSolar Inc. (BSRC) BioBacksheet; Utilizes Renewable Resources to Produce Less Costly Solar Power

"Our dependence on fossil fuel is overwhelming to the extent that even solar energy, touted by some to be the forefront of clean and sustainable energy, depends on petroleum for the making of some of its components. Traditionally, backsheet - a protective covering used in the back of virtually all photovoltaic solar cells - is made from expensive petroleum-based film. With skyrocketing oil prices coming in the picture, price of electricity produced by solar panels won't be as cheap as it could be - putting a halt on a massive switch to solar power as the logical answer to our energy struggles…

"Santa Clarita, California-based company BioSolar has been working on breakthrough technology to produce bio-based materials from renewable resources - one that will reduce the cost per watt of solar cells. While most of the solar industry focus on photovoltaic efficiency to reduce cost, BioSolar introduces a new dimension of cost reduction by replacing petroleum-based plastic solar cell components with durable bio-based materials. Surprising attendees at the SPIE Symposium on Solar Applications and Energy in San Diego, BioSolar recently revealed its BioBacksheet's secret: cotton and castor beans…

"BioSolar starts with used cotton rags and turns them into a film of cellulose, a natural fiber. They then blend this film with a type of nylon made from castor beans by Philadephia-based Arkema Inc. to make the so-called BioBacksheet. BioSolar's plant-based plastic backing for solar cells is supposed to withstand extreme temperatures and moisture, keeping solar photovoltaic equipment safe when exposed to the elements…"
